Tis' the Season of Smiles!

The Holidays are fast approaching and Amazon is kicking of their #SeasonOfSmiles campaign! The Amazon Smile program is a GREAT way to support End 68 Hours of Hunger, especially during the holiday season! Buying gifts, decorations, party supplies and even groceries through Amazon is convenient and at the same time can benefit children who suffer from food insecurity.

Unfortunately, there are over 13 million kids in this country that go to school hungry. One in five children in the United States live in a household which lacks consistent access to enough food. Being hungry has an enormous impact on a student’s ability to concentrate in school which can lead to the student falling behind academically. Chronic hunger can lead to illness, depression, anxiety and behavior problems. These children have a higher probability of dropping out of high school, which can lead to lower paying jobs, which can continue the cycle of food insecurity for their own children.

This is what compelled Claire Bloom to tackle the issue head on and start the End 68 Hours of Hunger organization. A teacher in Claire’s home town of Dover, NH mentioned that she had students who went from lunch on Friday to breakfast on Monday with nothing to eat over the weekend. Claire never dreamed that this issue was so wide spread, and in her own community! When she went to the school to offer a financial solution, she was told that they needed someone to create a program to pack food to send home with the kids on Fridays. Bloom took on the project, along with community volunteers and End 68 Hours of Hunger was born! The program soon became more widespread and is currently in place in 7 states. This program is 100% volunteer driven and supported by donations.

Bloom relays a story of what happened in the Dover school where the program all started. “The school nurse called a 6-year-old girl into the office and explained the program. She took out a bag and showed her the food. The little girl reached out with both arms, grabbed the backpack and hugged it. She didn’t want to let it go.”
