Meditation Relay to benefit End 68 Hours of Hunger

ELIOT, Maine — Yoga in ME will hold its first ever Meditation Relay on April 29 to raise awareness about childhood hunger in the community and to raise funds to support End 68 Hours of Hunger.

End 68 Hours of Hunger is a private, not-for-profit, effort to confront the approximately 68 hours of hunger that some school children experience between the free lunch they receive in school Friday and the free breakfast they receive in school Monday.

The Meditation Relay is modeled on charitable walk-a-thons or bike-a-thons, but in this case fund-raisers will be participating in guided meditations for as many hours as they’d like during the event.

“Our Meditation Relay is intended to be a fun and inclusive way to invite the community at large to join Yoga in ME in our efforts to be of service,” said Nancy Garnhart, co-owner of Yoga in ME. “This event is designed to be accessible to all levels of physical fitness and yoga experience – which is in line with our desire to make healthy food available to all children in our community.”

The public is invited to participate in the Meditation Relay. Come for a few minutes or a few hours. Those who wish to participate are welcome to join for as many meditation sessions as they would like. Come to the studio and meditate, or join remotely for the meditation sessions. The event will be broadcast live on the Yoga in ME Facebook Page.

There will be 30-minute sessions starting every hour and half hour. Each session will be different depending on the facilitator. Some might be 20 minutes of guided meditation followed by 10 minutes of walking meditation. Others might be 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra.

There is no minimum amount of sitting time required.

“We request that participants observe silence throughout the entire event. Plan to arrive in silence and maintain it throughout the event,” said Garnhart.

Light refreshments will be available.
