At Heronfield the 8th graders study US History and the theme is the American identity.
Students learn that we are indeed a nation of immigrants, and they learn about the immigration story of a family member.
It is not about ancestry it is about awareness of the myriad challenges that immigrants face.
One of our core values is celebration, so the 8th graders each prepare a dish that their family makes, and then they feed the entire school lunch to honor the ethnic heritage of each family.
We combine this celebration with the 8th-grade service project of recognizing the food insecurity of local families, so in order to “purchase” the food prepared by 8th-grade students, students of all the other grades bring in items for the End 68 Hours of Hunger program or a cash donation.
