Excerpt from End 68 Hours Book

“The test of the morality of a society is what it does for its children” -Dietrich Bonhoeffer

If you subscribe to the “Human Capital” theory, children are born with a specific genetic potential which can change depending on what happens during their lives. My focus is on the effects of poor nutrition, particularly in the early school years, on the human capital of America’s children.

There is clear evidence that malnutrition in the womb causes a dramatic decrease in a child’s IQ, educational attainment, and earning potential.”

Poor nutrition during a child’s early years leads to a number of profound consequences on growth and development making it impossible for them to fulfill their potential. Negative impacts include cognitive and socio-emotional development.

-Claire Bloom’s book- End 68 Hours of Hunger: Ending Childhood Hunger in America, One School at a Time.
